Making a difference one bike at a time
The team at have a project to re-cycle bikes and make them available for people who need them most. 91 bikes have been taken from at ÖйúPÕ¾'s Community Recycling Centres. These have then been refurbished by inmates at Ford Open Prison.
Under the Bikes4Ukraine scheme, bikes have given to Ukrainian refugees living across the county. These refugees live with host families, supported by the Homes for Ukraine scheme. The bikes along with safety equipment have enabled people to travel to school, college and work. This includes helmets, high-vis vests and locks.
We received lovely feedback from a mother, whose daughter was a recipient of a bike. She said "We are very grateful for the bike. Now our walks have become even more interesting and active! Thank you so much for taking the time to find a bike for our daughter. We really appreciate your help!"
Active ÖйúPÕ¾ and managers from Suez Community Recycling Centres also delivered bikes to children attending a school holiday club in Woking. The club is provided by the Dept for Education Activities and Food programme. The children were able to take home a bike at the end of the week. The smiles on their faces speak volumes.
We're proud that this project is supporting communities to be active and giving a new lease of life to pre-loved bikes, which may have ended up in landfill.
