Course intent

Learn how to write using a broad edged calligraphy pen. Write some decorative quotations for cards and other paper-based projects. Calligraphy has developed over centuries and so we will look back at old manuscripts, learn how they were made, and use the style of writing in our work.

What will I learn?

You will learn one of several Gothic Scripts (a different one each term)

• Be shown how to write the lower-case alphabet using a square cut pen to get thicks and thins in your lettering
• Learn how to rule up and organise your lettering with good spacing and margins, and how to create different layouts.
• Use your writing with some decorative elements and some different colours.
• Use some English quotations of your own choice in your writing.

  Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

  This course is for Hongkongers; no experience of calligraphy with a pen is necessary but if you have done a little before you can work on more advanced projects. If you have any queries about the course, please email the tutor on adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk

  What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

  You only need to bring a biro and notebook for making notes.

Other items:

• All materials will be supplied that is: paper, pencils, rulers, pens, nibs, reservoirs, brushes, inks and paints will be supplied.

  What can I do when I finish the course?

  Join another class specifically for Hongkongers or join a regular calligraphy class with ÖйúPÕ¾ Adult Learning.
