Watercolour Painting - Improvers

Course intent

You will learn the skills needed to develop your painting skills, gaining a deeper understanding of the processes whilst developing personal expression in your watercolour painting.

You will learn with Rose Bramwell, who has 30 years鈥 experience teaching Art. She works as an editorial illustrator and visualisation illustrator for local architects as well as exhibiting in local galleries and art fairs.

What will I learn?

  • worksheets designed by the tutor
  • contextual material linked to the course
  • The correct use of watercolour painting tools and paper including brush holds
  • Watercolour techniques, both traditional and modern
  • Distinguish the use of tone and 鈥榣ighter darks鈥
  • Mix colour including both traditional and modern palettes.
  • Composition: Leading eye, focus and 鈥榣ost & found鈥
  • Perspective: Establishing eyeline levels, vanishing points and different viewpoints
  • Creating texture
  • The different tools, papers and materials used in watercolour painting
  • The importance of a clean and tidy studio

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    Improvers level. For those who have completed various 鈥楤eginner鈥 level courses as well as those who are becoming more confident in their skills. .

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • whatever watercolour materials you may already have purchased
  • a pad of A4 cartridge paper,
  • soft grade of pencils (HB, 2B, and 4B),
  • soft rubber and sharpener
  • Paper: Watercolour paper 鈥 Bockingford 300 gsm or similar, A4 or A3 size.
  • Brushes: Synthetic or synthetic/hair mixtures, Round: 8 & 12 or larger and a dagger brush 1 inch plus a larger wash brush (Hake or 陆鈥 round Mop Brush)
  • Paints: Artist鈥檚 Quality in tubes or pans. Most are usually contained in a beginner鈥檚 set or can be bought separately
  • Large Watercolour palette for mixing paint
  • HB, 2B, 3B pencils
  • Tissues and/or cotton rags
  • Small notebook or sketchbook/ journal (suggested A4/A5).

Materials and resources you will need through the course will be discussed at induction.

What can I do when I finish the course?

To progress onto other SAL courses and specific one-day workshops.
