Things to think about

Make a list of what matters most to you, such as:

  • opening hours
  • cost
  • location
  • availability

Call a few providers first to check they meet your needs. Then visit the ones you like.
Take your child with you to see how they respond.

Be aware that many early years providers have waiting lists. You may need to put your child’s name down at more than one in case your first choice isn’t available.

It’s never too early to start looking. Some parents join waiting lists shortly after birth, especially in busy areas. Ask providers when to register, as places can fill up quickly.

Ask for a trial run if you're unsure. Use references for peace of mind.
Only sign a contract when you're happy. Read it carefully and ask questions if anything is unclear.
