What is business waste?
According to the government's overview on managing business and commercial waste, business and commercial waste is "any waste that comes from a commercial activity is business waste. If you use part of your home to run your business then any waste from that part is business waste".
Business waste also includes any waste that comes from:
- construction
- demolition
- industry
- agriculture
Business are responsible for ensuring the waste they produce. For more details, please read .
Where can you dispose of business waste?
Business and commercial waste must be taken to a waste transfer station where it will be weighed and a charge made for its disposal.
The following community recycling centre's have a waste transfer station for business waste:
It is illegal for businesses to dispose of their waste through any of the facilities provided for householders such as household kerbside collection bins, street bins, local household recycling banks or community recycling centres.
Requirement to use a waste transfer station
For businesses, traders and commercial contractors
You will need to and be able to show a valid Waste Carriers Licence or exemption certificate.
For residents
If you are redirected from a Community Recycling Centre to a Waste Transfer Station because of the type of waste you are carrying and need to dispose of, you will not require a Waste Carriers Licence providing the waste has come from your own home. You will be asked to complete and sign a 'Household waste declaration form' to confirm this.
